Grimes is leaving for Baylor

Roger French. Arguably beat BYU assistant coach ever.

And it says A LOT about LaVell that guys like French, Chow, Reynolds etc stayed with him 20-30 years. Imagine that happening today.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ that’s the only thing that matters with coaches and players nowadays. And the end result of the country is what’s happening with the country…

The only I did not put him on the list was that he never left to be a HC.

French own words “Why do I want to go be a HC when I have full authority to run the offense how I want?”

My friend Bart Oates was part of the famous “French Foreign Legion” group in the early 80’s

Some coaches maybe like Saban or Meyers,. but the majority of them love coaching.

My neighbor works at the Utah AD office, He told me that Whittingham who earn 5 mil a year salary, asked the AD office to not pay him last July and use the money to pay the office staff, so they could keep their jobs during the pandemic.

He did not get paid over almost 9 months. I should also mentioned that he lives in the same house for 30+ years, very low keyed in his neighborhood.

I think Kalani is like that himself…

Why did you have to go and tell me that Floyd??? Now here I want to hate Whit and then you have to go and tell me stuff like that that makes me think he must be a pretty good guy…

My friend says Whitt is one of the most humble guys he knows. Here is this big time coach, but yet he stops and asks how your family is doing.

I met him once at a ball game I was doing, his son was playing on a team I umpired. He came up to me after the game and thanked me for being consistent and fair. Which surprised me.

When you’re blind you will always be consistent and fair :joy:

In todays world there is NO black and white. There is no hard line for what is right and wrong. I’m not saying there shouldn’t be, just that there isn’t. My point is that trying to say the loss was all on the defense is not accurate, just like saying it was all on the offense is not accurate as well. You made the point of how the things that members of the church do today were not tolerated or okay even 20 years ago. I think that is generally true. I know of many people who are breaking serious commandments with no repercussions or accountability. People doing these same things would have been disfellowshipped or excommunicated. The solutions to the problems of the world today are simple but nearly impossible to accomplish because we are too far gone as a society.

Yeeesh… back to the arm strength thing, etc. I hope Wilson gets a few years to be an understudy of one of the good QB’s in the league right now… Rogers, Brees, Brady, or I hope he gets to ease his way into a position. I think he can be a Josh Allen type player too.

Good luck to him.

Why did that surprise you? because you aren’t consistent and fair? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

You must be both of those things then… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Most fans don’t appreciate what officials do and the efforts they are making to try and do the best they can at their jobs.

Whitt surprised because he noticed the effort and thanked me for it. Thank you’s are not common in sports.

Haha, I knew what you meant. You may remember that I officiated many years ago for 3 or 4 years and then got too busy with family and work. It was a rough gig but I enjoyed it and in spite of what grasshopper says, I was a good official. I got good reviews from experienced officials and actually got some thank you’s from coaches and fans.

Nice post

I must be uncommon. Although I did egg Jim on once to hit me with a technical foul. He did

I’m sure you were when you coached the JR High games
You were okay. Just missed a lot of calls.

Your nonsense never ends.

Agreed. My comment was not meant to be disparaging towards Coach Grimes. While he seemingly relied heavily on ARod and Fesi for some play calling, he was a master with bid picture mechanics and the offensive line and we will do well to come close to replacing him and Mateos.

This is particularly true of me when driving.

No worries–I didn’t think you were taking a swipe at Grimey, and your point is well taken RE our overall record since he took over. As a former paid HC I can tell you that good players make a crappy coach look at least average, and a good coach look great. I was the paid HC for many years at our local middle school (just retired from coaching this year after a big expansion of my real business). We have a big school district that provides school football starting in 7th grade–boy, people thought I was a great coach the year I had a star 8th grade QB and RB who are now both on full D1 scholarships ). Both are non members by the way, and I got both to a special invite camp at BYU. Coach Detmer immediately started recruiting both, but BYU didn’t recruit either very heavily after the coaching change. Both kids and their fathers left the BYU camp with nothing but love and respect for BYU and tell everyone it was one of the best camps they attended.

Back to your point: Grimes had the perfect storm of being aggressive and creative, having a bunch of great players, AND playing a schedule loaded with many terrible teams. Even Houston and UCF–two teams with very talented, athletic rosters–had just terrible defenses.
