Not ready to play

Figured it out-it was Andrew Rich

Scott, go back to those years that BYU outscored the other team and look at their defense under the coaching of Fred Whittingham… They we as talented defense as Scovil offense was.

Names like Shell, Holme, Goveuiva (sp?), White, Herman, G. Titensor, and of course Kyle Whittingham.

People forget that back in the glory days, the defense was as stout as the offense was explosive.

BTW, your comment are not just opinions, it is also laced with condescending words like “fake”, “ignorant”, etc. Which makes your comments judgmental.

Ah yes, the brick layer… He hit you and you felt like a ton of bricks fell on you! :open_mouth:

Both the offense and defense had issues in the game. The defense couldn’t get CC off the field which means the offense needed to do more with their possessions. They had 11 possessions and only scored 3 times, no touchdowns in the 2nd half. That is way less than what they have typically done this year and disappointing. When your possessions are limited you better make the most of them.

If either unit had performed up to expectations we wouldn’t be bewailing the loss. Neither one met expectations and the coaches didn’t make the right adjustments either offensively or defensively thus a very disappointing loss. I don’t believe for a minute CC is better than BYU. They were better Saturday 12/5/2020 and that one is unfortunately in the books.

Depends on the discussion at the time. When you personally go after me I will respond based on the allegations. When talking about politics I will bring up liberal talking points about fake and ignorance as it warrants. You haven’t been great at this either.

But, I also know that just because I think the main reason for the loss was the offenseless offense doesn’t mean there aren’t other areas that could have made a difference. I’ve never said that.

As far as defense under Lavell, 22 points given up wasn’t all that better.

I agree with you. So, we have to look at what takes more preparation for a game this late in the season, offense or defense? The answer is defense. The offense should be able to run the plays with success and make adjustments as well more easily. But, we did not and we made some huge drive killing mistakes like dropped passes, penalties and that -20 yard pass play. The offense should have been able to capitalize on the 11 opportunities. Especially in the 2nd half. Does this make sense?

Floyd thanks for reminding the masses that our great teams were great because they also had great defensive players. For example: the 84 team had (I think 8 offensive starters who were drafted or signed), but also because it had a bunch of STUD defensive players, several with very good NFL careers, and a couple of all pro caliber players–off the top of my head (without verifying):
Kyle Morrell
Mark Allen
Cary Whittingham
Leon White (NFL star)
Kurt Gouveia (NFL star)
Shawn Knight (1st round NFL pick and solid pro)
Jim Herrmann

Floyd, let me add this: I always LOVED Bronco’s aggressive, modern, sometimes CRAZY blitz and coverage schemes–he played a 3-3-5, but played OLB who were big and strong and fast enough to become rush ends, so he would regularly rush 5, then one play he’d rush 2 and drop 8, then he would bring 6 or 7 on the next down, and his run blitz philosophy was epic: YOU WILL NOT RUN ON ME. His pass D philosophy: YOU MAY BREAK A COUPLE LONG ONES BUT I WILL BREAK YOUR WILL BEFORE THE GAME IS OVER. Bronco put A LOT of defensive players in the NFL, in part because they were prepared for the aggressive schemes in the NFL. The only will broken by the BYU D the last 4 years is the will of super fans like us to love watching the games. It is PAINFUL to watch our D vs ANY decent to good offense. I am not aware of any top D1 team or NFL team that plays defense the way BYU does now: sit back and wait, allow the opponent to dominate TOP, concede every pass underneath, forsake TFL, etc. All for fear of a long play. I agree with Chris and anyone else who has said it: Kalani needs to man up and fire Tuiaki (I’ve been saying it for 3 years by the way, but the CC game was the ultimate cherry on top).

Don’t forget Todd Shell who played many years in SF…
Herschel Walker once said that Shell hit him harder than any other player he had played against (in college).

I loved the sound defensive schemes under Fred Whittingham (sorry I am old school). “Hit em’, hit em’ hard and makes sure they know you are still there”

I do not like seeing coaches get fired easily, but the DC has had four years and I really do not see improvement from year one. I could be wrong, but I just don’t see players improving like I feel they should.

You say this, but your posts speak otherwise.

Haha Todd Shell hit people like a freight trai! How about Jordan Pendleton! OUCH! Hurts just thinking about the sound he made when he hit guys! You know who else HIT people? Your new congressman Burgess Owens at “The U” before it was “The U” (I love that Owens was baptized by one of the greatest players and best guys to ever come out of BYU football)

Most of the hitting done by Tuiaki’s defenses the past 4 years has been tackling guys after 5 yard gains. Sorry. Kalani threw Detmer under the bus after one bad year (granted I think Grimes has been EXCELLENT) but has a blind spot a mile wide for Tuiaki and his failings year after year.

No Floyd. You go back and see. I don’t go after you for your opinion. You have every right to your opinion. But, when you do offer it, I have every right to question it and bring in information to either agree with it or not. Why do you think we all have to agree all the time?

So, if Grimes takes the Utah State job, then we have to replace both offense and defense coaches.

Yep, me too - while saying in my head only, prior to the CC game, BYU has a pattern of turning greatness into just goodness.

Lived in married Wymount terrace ,my ward. Bought his Grand Prix from him when he was drafted. Can’t remember which game it was but Todd blitzed, jumped the lateral, pic 6. Want to talk about being in nirvana? Danny Ainge was in that same ward. I QBed the flag football team, couldn’t get many of the football guys to join us. They formed a team of their own. We beat them. Good times.

Our man Owens put out sniveling shyster Ben McAdams even after the hit job Dems wasted over 8 million $$ smearing him. Twas a beautiful thing.

Yes, yes, yes - was and is beautiful. I love the waste of THEIR money.

Wymount Terrace. What year? We were there 1977-1980

I hope Owens does a good job for Utah. I loved him as a player and have rooted for him in politics because I own a small business and he is one of the VERY FEW politicians who actually care about small businesses (they all say it but they are liars and full of you know what). Owens never met a fight he didn’t think he could win, and won more than he lost. I bet you $100 that if he were BYU’s DC, we would not drop 8 guys 10 yards downfield on almost every play

Right, you just say things like “the reason BYU lost was because their offense only scored 3 points in the second half. It wasn’t the defense’s fault or the defensive coordinator/coaches… 22 points is good defense”. Yes, those are things you have said… in so many words.

Why do you think we all have to disagree all the time? That is a more relevant question than the one you ask Floyd. I don’t care what topic it is or who is posting, you disagree with what others say about 95% of the time. Yes, it’s true.

The funny thing about my post here is that 95% of the people will agree with what I said and you, once again, will disagree with it!
