Take a deep breath please

rust and confidence.

I have not seen any sign of pain on his shoulder when he came home from his mission. No surgery was done but I wonder if he is struggling with his stroke which might explain his poor shooting?

Exactly right on almost everything you said here, beginning with grasshopper being way off track. Grasshopper doesn’t understand that when you keep doing the same things over and over you are going to get the same results. That is BYU and Dave Rose right now. He just can’t seem to adjust and bring himself to do something different. BYU had that game, St. Mary’s isn’t that good but somehow the team decided to roll over and give it away like they do every season since coming into the wcc. They will get up for a game vs. Gonzaga and maybe win one like that but then choke and lose a game to San Diego or USF, etc.

Not sure where the common sense and understanding is in a statement like this grasshopper. Both teams were 12-2. How was BYU not supposed to be close? The game was in the MC, BYU was playing well coming in and be honest, this St. Mary’s team isn’t nearly as good as last years team. BYU should have WON this game. Lastly, I hate to burst your Rose bubble but outcoached is the truth.

And now you know why I can’t for sanity respond. BYU was favored depending on who you read.
Rose was outcoached again

SF is a trap game that we could lose.

You and others have been saying we play an easy pre-season. SM has their players back from last year when they blew us out. Our team is mostly new players. Yet, we were in the game.
Where you say we had that game, we never were more than 8 points ahead. It was close all the way. We had the right offense and plays. But the players made mistakes. And in OT, all shots were short and the players got away from team ball. Tonme that is where playing together for 3 years SM has the edge. Not the coaching.

Actually almost every commentator had this as a toss-up. Some had BYU slightly ahead. Some had SMC slightly ahead. A few who were out to lunch still had their pre-season analysis in place had SMC winning large.

It was supposed to be close. OT is as close as you can get…so it came out exactly as expected except that BYU forgot to show up for the last 5 minutes. Though Bennett, their coach, was kind enough to say that if it had gone another 5 minutes it probably would have been tied again.

Replying to me and saying “you” I will assume you are talking to me. I never said anything about an “easy preseason”. All I have said is that Dastrup needed more time during that preseason to develop his game and his chemistry with the main players on the team. That didn’t happen. Rose stayed with Worthington, Seljaas, Nixon (who isn’t helping anything right now) and Cannon even, to the general detriment of the team. Dastrup is so much more productive, in every aspect of the game, than any of those other players. In fact, for the amount of time he gets I wouldn’t be surprised if he is as productive as Childs and Bryant.

It’s a shame that Rose and his staff can’t see that. I think they do, but they aren’t willing to move forward on it. They insist on holding the team back… as if the league were scripted to have them finish third and BYU is just complying with the script… again.

Also, the St. Mary’s team I saw play BYU Saturday isn’t the same team that dominated BYU last season. Maybe BYU is better, but the Gaels are not and that should have been a win for BYU. They had 8 pt. leads in the first and second half. SMC never led by more than 4. Yeah it was close but BYU led for most of the game until the end when it mattered. BYU is not mostly new players… on their home floor that should have been a win.

Please Grasshopper-yes FT are always critical but that’s like saying Childs lost the game because he missed ft’s. You seem oblivious to everything everyone is telling you. Surprised that Seljaas took the last shot-he is shooting 32% from 3’s this year and worse than that lately. Who said anything about Cannon? Of course Cannon shoots 43% from 3 and Dastrup shoots 66% so duh you pick who u want shooting the game winner🤔

SM has mostly the exact same team. The same ones that lit us up for a 31 point victory.
Dastrup isn’t close to Childs or Bryant. That was pretty funny.
Here is my starting line up.

  1. Hardnett
  2. Bryant
  3. Haws
  4. Dastrup
  5. Childs

Any disagreements?

He gives the team “production”, which means he gets points (very high % shooting), rebounds, blocked shots, steals, etc. while he is in the game. He does all that playing an average of 6 minutes a game. If you project out his stats with that number of minutes to 30 minutes a game, that would mean multiplying his game averages by 5 and I’m guessing that he would come close to matching the other two, I understand that this is a difficult, if not impossible concept for you to understand so I don’t expect an educated reply.

My comments are meant for others as well. I’m not saying Dastrup is “close” to the same level as Childs and Bryant, but I will say he could be… with more experience and time on the court. You don’t have to agree with that. In fact, if you don’t agree I will feel a lot better about saying it.

The game against SM in was 1-4 and little production and made several mistakes in a short period in the second half. So, he did well against weak teams but not against strong teams. He will get better. But, Rose has to think about winning this year.

They do have mostly the same team…but are missing the defensive specialists who started. They are missing Rahon and Pineau much more than BYU is missing Mika. Rahon, in particular, played more minutes than anyone else on their team last year.
Their defence last year is what made them a better than average SMC team.
Iff they challenge Gonzaga this year it will only be if their defence plays better than it did against BYU.

They have Landale and they have the same great shooting team. They reload in the areas they lose. Did you really see any fall off in their defense against us?
The reason we were close to winning this year was because of our play, not theirs. Dastrup has said in interviews he is still way behind learning the defense and being able to perform at a high level. Sejlass too. Haws is getting better at team defense. He doesn’t dive deep into the lane so he can get back out to his man. Others do well. But, in the heat of the stretch run, some got lost and lost contact with their man. Hardnett got way too far into the lane a couple of times and his man made 3’s.
As the year goes on, we will get better at defense and the offense. Next year with the same group we will be able to win the close games against SM and others. I just hope we don’t have a coaching change next year.

last year smc had a top 30 defense, this year they barely make the top 150…hardly the same team on defence.
last year’s smc offense was a top 15 offence this year they are a top 5 offence… some difference a bit of improvement…
the reason smc is not a top 25 team this year and they were last year is their defence…
and the difference in their defence this year and last is Rahon who played more than 90% of the time last year and Pineau who played more than half the minutes in any given game last year…combined about a player and a half in a game…basically 60 minutes a game of better defence than any player on their team this year…thus the drop…

Wow, you really researched well before you stuck your foot in your mouth…

Really? I wonder why… maybe it is because he hasn’t played very much this season? Why do you think he is playing more? because Rose is finally waking up to the fact that his potential is way higher than others who have played more? or that maybe he makes significant contributions in his very limited play time? or maybe Rose realizes that he has helped the team win a couple games they may not have won without him?

What a revelation…

Don’t confuse the grasshopper with facts.

He has a hard enough time keeping his own imaginary facts in order, let alone the real ones.

Lots of interesting comments here. I was seriously disappointed BYU lost. I actually thought they would win but then my expectations for BYU basketball are always higher than their achievements since they joined the WCC. They should have won it on their home floor. I don’t understand drawing up a play for Seljaas. I think you let Bryant drive and take the shot and then hope Childs can clean up if there is a miss.

The minutes I have seen Dastrup play in several games this year indicates he is a talent on the level of Bryant and Childs. He has a great outside shot, rebounds well, passes, and handles ball well for a 6’10" guy. The one weakness I see is that he seems to be out of position on defense on occasion. I think that is something that can be corrected with more playing time.

I think Seljaas has generally played well other than his shooting slump on 3 point shots. His defense isn’t that bad from what I have seen. He does ok defensively if he isn’t matched up with a post player who is too big for him to handle or a quicker guard. He does well guarding medium sized wing players with average quickness and he seems to play decent team defense. I think he needs a role coming off the bench playing 12-15 minutes per game. When Seljaas gets 20 minutes and Dastrup 10, or less, I think that is a mistake.

I would give more minutes to Dastrup than Seljaas but they actually are too completely different players and match-ups would dictate who plays when. I would also play Cannon more than Seljaas and that is generally what happens. My first two guys off the bench would be Cannon and Dastrup.

Dastrup played 17 minutes last night against San Francisco ,Seljass played 13, and Cannon played 18 minutes. That is more what I would like to see in terms of who gets the bench minutes. An eight man rotation is generally enough if you have 3 guys who can play 10-20 minutes a game. If Nixon gets back BYU would have a strong 9 man rotation. Bergerson and Shaw are situational subs who can play minutes now and then and not hurt the team. Troy is obviously a mop up guy.

BYU won last night against SF. Other than that, you are exactly right on your analysis. Dastrup has the skills and talent. But, by his own admission, he has a lot to work on for defense. He does get out of position. And this is why his playing time is diminished. The coaches are focusing in on defense this year and if you aren’t ready for prime time then you sit and do the practice in practice.
Dastrup, in his Tuesday interview, said he studies film a lot to help him learn and prepare. But he knows that this is League time and to get the minutes you have to be able to do the work against 1st stringers before getting the chance. Patience people. He will get better and play more as time goes on.
And, you spoke about matchups. That does dictate how much playing time an average defender gets at this point. When Dastrup gets better, he can play more. I think he will against Pacific as they play in the paint a lot more with big men.

Its all about the matchups as you say. I liked the minutes the Dastrup 17, Seljaas 14 and Worthington, 18 got last night. I also thought that Hardnett had his best game as a Coug, since the UMass game winner. Hardnett was pathetic in the SMC game, got burned numerous times when he sagged but Hardnett abused SF last night. He is very good at finishing near the rim. And I like his defense when he is concentrating.

I just wanted to clarify about the sagging Hardnett was doing inthe SM game. As I posted in a couple posts that you didn’t read, the coaches made that decision in the second half to try and stop Landale. Rose said on the coach’s show on BYUTV that they did so. That is a fact. Had they just continued letting Landale have his 2 points and not the outside 3’s we could have won that game.
