What dose everyone think about BYU not picking a starting QB?
Is it going to hurt us?
Do you think they are going to play both for awhile?
Do you think this is a strategy to keep the other teams on their toes not knowing who to prepare for?
Or is this another one of Roderick’s bad decision?
Personally I think Roderick being on the hot seat is causing the indecision. I think you can see this when he says he’s talk to everyone. both are good QB, but he doesn’t know who to choose because it could mean his job and potentially everyone else’s.
its always bad if you don’t have a starting QB by this point, because every QB play is different the Offense doesn’t get use to their play style. For example Oline has to block different for each QB and the receivers have to get use to how he throws the ball.
So in the end I think both will play the first game. We will win but it wont be a commanding win. Both QBs will play ok and we will be playing both for the SMU game. That game will be a mess and they will pick a QB after it (or during) and it will take about 3 game to get our feet under us and win another game.
Job #1 for the OC EVERY season is to determine who will be QB1 and build the offense around him. ARod is failing, but his body of work as a QB recruiter and QB coach is a train wreck so no surprise.
You nailed it—ARod is wavering because he knows his head is on the chopping block. It looks like a circus to us and my guess it it feels like a circus to the players.
Have to agree. I do not have the connections/sources to know anything going on but, I just can’t get past “tale of the tape” between Bohanon and Retzlaff. Size, weight athletisism, etc. Bohanon has a chance to be elite, like top 5 in the country if he gets the protection he needs and his accuracy is above average. It’s his speed and size that he will make HUGE plays. The other key difference is that if he is successful running and passing, defenses will have to game plan around him. I don’t see a case teams game-planning around Retzlaff. Retzlaff might have a better arm and can run, but not even close in my mind. Momentum is velocity times mass. Do the math, it would be a huge advantage in running out of the pocket. Especially as he is accelerating up to sprint velocity. Think of that momentum hitting a defensive back square on, now think about the more likely case of that back coming in at angles trying to grab him and also often misjudging the angle. Now think about Teysom Hill against Texas. Check out those highlights to get a glimpse of what he might do. This is the potential upside to Bohonen. Yes, success is not guaranteed, but if you are the OC and want to clam up the doubters, you need to go for it. To me, if both QBs play at or near the top level of what they can do, BYU wins 9-10 games with Bohanan and with Retzlaff it’s 6-7 games.
No Brainer - Yes indecision is killing me and makes ARod look weak.
I think it would be great if you would answer the question. You are like Trump in that you are your own worst enemy. This election shouldn’t even be close but because Trump can’t adjust and make himself more likeable he is instead making the race a close one. It’s ridiculous.
As far as the QB situation goes I agree with the notion that Roderick is waffling because he is more concerned about his job than he is about winning football games. That is why the program is in trouble. BYU has the talent to win a lot of games and to destroy teams like Northern Illinois. It’s no different than last year honestly, but last year was a disaster because Roderick couldn’t get out of his own way. This is his last opportunity to make it happen.
Wrong about the reason Trump is having a difficult time getting ahead. It’s all because the media is putting up a wall to protect Harris. The UN-Democratic Harris and Party are using Stalin like techniques. At least in 2020, Biden was actually elected by democracy voting in the primaries. Then, removed by the Pelosi coup.
Rodrick may be thinking long term as well. Bohanan is one and done. And, the idea the players aren’t happy is just a guess by the armchair QBs in here. Well, we shall see in how many days? 7 days-a-way!
welllllll, Bohanon would be done with College FB and playing in the NFL if his shoulder was 100% way back when. that is the $$$$ question. As you know, some injuries are never the same hence Bohanon kicking around at UCF, now BYU.
Everything you said makes great sense
Insiders who know would not only agree but throw this out there…Roderick is a good coach, not a great coach. He was OK before we played a B12 schedule but now that we are in the B12, we need to play a B12 salary to a great OC. Rodderick may get us to a Bowl game but he is NOT going to get us to a B12 championship game.
Like ■■■■ Harmon, Dave is way too blue Kool-Aid for me but he does address our biggest needs:
1 Sitake will be using both QBs. Retzlaff’s ball control vs. Bohanon’s explosiveness.
2 BYU’s Oline improvement
3 Our RBs, if LJ is healthy. we will be very tough to stop. refer to #2 above. it all starts and stops with our Oline!!!
4 Hill’s defense ( I think Hill is our future HC) and I think Hill will have a great D year.
so it looks like there is a starting QB, but we have to keep it secret because we need an advantage over a team we should beat by 40points. I got to say I am feeling really confident about Saturday.
“Roderick said they won’t announce the starter in an effort to make Southern Illinois prepare for both quarterbacks.”
When it comes to the offense I’m not even sure that the cup has water in it. I haven’t heard anyone outside of the BYU zeitgeist say they are going to be any good, I have heard it about the defense but not the offense. So after watching how snippy Kalani was with the media this week. My guess is that he forced the decision and it really wasn’t a team decision. He knew if they came out and played both of them it would doom the entire season. I really hope they are better this year, but with this indecision, how they played last year it isn’t giving me confidence.
