This is interesting take on NIL and the portal

I ran across this article about how many coaches are leaving the college ranks. by the article, it assumes that many are leaving because of how the NIL and portal is causing the destruction of college sports and that is why so many “high paid” coaches are leaving.

With college football upheaval, coaches are exploring options | Opinion - Deseret News

Just thought you guys would like to know.

So, others in High School will fill their positions. Capitalism in the works.

This is not capitalism; this is destroying amateur sports. How you can think of this any other way is beyond me.

It’s capitalism and the free market. It’s destroying tyranny and oppression. Basically indentured servitude. Of course it’s capitalism. The right to own property including your own name. It’s also breaking down the need for under the table money to the athletes that we know happens. The athletes don’t have to feel as though they are breaking the law to earn income for their work.

If Course, this is destroying college sports. BYU just had to travel to West Virginia, then to OU just to play an in conference schedule. Not to much of a challenge for a basketball team, but for a football time, a nightmare. All traditional rivalries have been destroyed. The student athlete dose not exist anymore, it is all about gettin paid from the athlete’s, colleges and coaches

Great article I posted on how the SEC has ruined college sports last week

What are you talking about? Why would a football team traveling twice in two week ends be a problem? If you think it’s a problem, then go follow the WCC that has no football. Good grief! As an independent, we did a lot of traveling all over the country and loved it. Why now that we are in a P5 conference is it a problem? Same with basketball or any other sport.

Then, there is the question about “tradition.” Something the Lord ran into during his mission on earth. Ya, new rivalries will have to be made in today’s world. Change is always inevitable. And, Change is good a lot of the time. Like being in a P5 league looking so far like we are heading to the NCAA Tournament this year. Traditions are merely habits that are sometimes good and sometimes bad. We should never judge on habits. Judge on merits.

Why do you say the student athlete doesn’t exist? As far as I’ve seen, many of the portal players are in their Master’s programs at BYU or as Bohanan, either in another Master’s program or Doctorate program. The schools rarely get paid for the programs in colleges unless it’s like a medical hospital association or other like institution. But in Football and Basketball, colleges make lots of money in which the players doing the work to bring in the fans and media haven’t gotten paid. Why? Coaches get paid. Did you think you shouldn’t get paid for the work you did while employed?

And yes, this is a discussion. Discussions should have opposing viewpoints if there’s any intellectual value to the conversation. I welcome your opposing view on this and every subject. Why does everything have its opposites again? Why did we accept the Father’s plan and not Lucifer’s? So that we would have opposition for learning with free choice. Heil Fuhrer! :grinning:

What a laugh! Like one has anything to do with the other. You are up on your pedestal today, preaching to the rest of us gentiles. You must be related to a sadducee somewhere back 2000 years ago. Too funny…

While the idea may be accurate, opposing viewpoints aren’t productive when they are thrown out there every time just for the sake of argument. That is something you can’t help apparently…

Nonsense. Debate relies on opposing opinions and facts. And my analogy is completely accurate and appropriate.

These two are not mutually exclusive…Capitalism and the free market have destroyed many old things…among other things it mostly destroyed indentured servitude and its cousin chatel slavery…

but of course modern masters rarely have the skills that indentured servitude created in so many of the old artisanal arts…

And that is why I used the word “and” instead of or. “And” means in addition to. The two together has brought billions of people out of poverty. Population control people don’t like that because in communism they simply starve and eliminate them.

Nonsense. You throw words around with no accountability for what you say. There are not a lot more than billions of people living in the world currently. To claim that anything has accomplished what you are claiming is impossible if not completely false. You need to spend some time researching or travelling around the world to see, first hand, what is really going on. You could start with your own city and then move on to your state and country.

I’m surprised you are clueless about this. Shocking!

I’m not saying capitalism is bad. It is easily the best alternative to anything else without the influence and presence of the Savior on earth. All I am saying is that the facts and figures are misrepresented and skewed by greedy and selfish people who want more.

You use an article from Forbes to prove your misunderstood point?

Classic.

There is no doubt in my mind that the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. There are a lot of billionaires, Kelce’s girlfriend included, that are mega wealthy. They don’t do anything to help lift people out of poverty. In fact, I believe they keep them mired in it. To suggest that this isn’t the case or that somehow billions of people have been lifted out of poverty because of capitalism is nonsense. I don’t care what your article suggests.

You read the article and misunderstood the points that capitalism is the reason for billions no longer in sever poverty starving around the world. There are still places that have poverty and need help. But the reality, communism has reared its ugly head up in South America and other regions of the world. Lead by so-called socialists, Marxism and any form of it eventually breeds tyranny. Even in Canada it’s getting worse. And look at Russia now.

Scott from your own article it says: “But what is more important to these hundreds of millions of people—that they are no longer starving, or that the wealth of multi-millionaires and billionaires may have increased to an even greater extent than their own standard of living?”

There is a slight difference between saying “billions” and saying " hundreds of million".

I could be wrong, but I think that was “Jim’s point” about your exaggeration of the facts.

Try reading the whole article in context. You will find a different take. Promise.

March 2023 global poverty update from the World Bank: the challenge of estimating poverty in the pandemic

The percentage of the world that lives in the grinding poverty of yore is vastly diminished…and yes of the roughly 8.1 billion people in the world billions do not live in the poverty that they would have had not capitalism had an effect on their local economies.

I have spent time in dozens of countries…which can give one a taste, but the research is unequivocal: capitalism raises people out of poverty like no other system has ever come close to…even China, pre-Xi, raised hundreds of millions out of poverty: let alone the rest of the world.

Jim
I think your saying Capitalism has a dark, ugly side to it too. Agree hundred percent! Still it’s the best humans have come up with yet.
As you intimated, Maybe nothing else will be better until the Saviors returns.
