Tidits of football fall camp

I have been so busy lately, but I ran across a few articles that I thought were interesting:

BYU lost 5 straight last year. And I think 4 straight games the prior year with a win vs. SMU. What people want to believe is that somehow getting rid of a line coach and a TE coach is going to fix the problem.

3 and outs doomed our Dfense and not having great QB play was the reason why BYU could not win late season games.

In ARod’s defense, QB injuries hurt… no doubt but I still go back to stupid play calling when we had OSU by 21 points at the half and OU beat. I say he goes

I totally agree with you Fish! The sad part of this is that if ARod flames out again, which I expect he will do, Sitake may be out with him. The mistake that Sitake makes is that he is not a really good coordinator guy so he is hesitant to make changes because he doesn’t really know what he is doing. He is a great recruiter and Face of the program but a poor X’s and O’s type of coach. ARod is just a bad coach who somehow got through the cracks and was promoted rather than fired.

So, go take his place Mr. Big mouth.

Why do you defend his poor coaching by saying dumb things like this?

If you weren’t aware of how bad he was in several games last season, games that made the difference in whether or not BYU was bowl eligible (they weren’t), then you aren’t as knowledgeable about the game of football that you think you are.

It’s okay to recognize and understand how many blunders he made with stupid play calls that were obvious even to the most simple of fans, except you apparently.

No need to resort to name calling when someone else makes an astute and legitimate comment about what a terrible job he did calling some of the plays and games he did last season.

Accept the fact and move on.,

He isn’t objective and not the decision maker. He threatens by calling for withholding money. That’s corruption. The people in charge will make the move when necessary. No need for anyone to call for their heads on a platter.

A former coach that was basically the same way was Lavell Edwards, X and O’s were not his strong points (if you don’t think so, go look at his record at Granite high), but getting his players and coaches on the same page, he was a master at doing this.

I remember Roger French being offered a HC position somewhere and when asked why he did not take it, his response was “Why do I want the headaches of being a HC? where at BYU I am already a HC on the offense”.

But I do agree with your assessment of hanging on too long to coaches that don’t meet the snuff.

Have you wondered why BYU loses blue chip legacy players to Utah (Gabe Reid comes to mind)? maybe there is a reason?

Do you remember the Utah game where BYU was playing their fourth string QB (Tom Young) because the first three were injured? Injuries happen, good coaches, make sure the backups are ready and that they have a plan that utilizes the talents of the backup. NOT FORCE him do things that is outside his skill set. Which I think ARod did last year.

BTW, Reilley Jensen says that Ratzlaff has secured the #1 spot (according to his sources), they are just giving Bohanan a fair chance to beat him out in fall camp. Not sure if that is true, but Ratzlaff has been working with Beck, so maybe he figured out some things.

Funny you mention players being lost to Utah. How about Utah players coming now to BYU? Lot’s of them now, aren’t there! Just thought I’d point that out.

called it will full ignorance

In football? Who?

Samson Nacua ring a bell? There are others.

Well, the reason Sampson came to BYU was not because of BYU, but rather to have a chance to play with his brother Puka on the team, who transferred from Washington so he could closer to his family after the death of his father.

Yea, but who else?
One player does not make "Utah players "

Excuses, excuses! Admit you were wrong. Be the bigger man

Still waiting…

Over a year ago, an insider (little birdy) said as much.

Great info, Floyd.

Both Tom L and I wondered out loud how the #1 JC QB per ESPN throws for 44 TDs vs. 14 interceptions could come to BYU and be so dang inaccurate. Almost feels as if Ratzlaff was not scouted well, who watched his footage? I know because I ALWAYs look at any good signee’s HS highlights and break down the tape entirely to see if he makes the D1 mustard.

So, BYU got duped. He was not ready for D1 and certainly not ready for the Big 12 speed,

flushing out almost every play and running for his life. I put all of that on AROD and his QB coach! Wait a minute, ARod is both the OC and the QB coach.

More evidence. Who has ARod recruited? in the past 5 years, did we sign a 4 or 5 star QB to replace Wilson or Hall out of HS? All I see are Rent a QBs.

Literally the longest tread on Cougarfan from 2023 was you arguing my post with everybody posted “Puca Nacua’s legend grows”. Your response, “Will Puca Nacua make the LA Rams once Cooper Cupp is healthy”. 685 Responses, 685 times you argued with everyone here, called them names. The reason why I am back to not responding to your horse ■■■■. You have a disease, get treated for it!

You sure have some real problems, don’t you? I can tell. Not a happy camper. Talking about Puka when the question answered was who came from Utah to BYU. I guess TDS isn’t reserved just for Trump.

The answer to the question why was Ratzlaff so inaccurate last season? There is a huge jump from competition from JC to D1. While accurate at JC for the most part, D1 proved to be too much for a backup QB. Oh! Did I write backup QB? He wasn’t even supposed to play last year. Uggg…Stick to basketball.

I am not sure that BYU got duped, my opinion is that ARod didn’t utilize Ratzlaff talents, but rather put in a position to fail by forcing Ratzlaff to play within AROD offense.

Prime example of this was Steve Young when he was with Tampa Bay. He was horrible there, his stats backs that up. The issue was the coach was trying to make Steve into a QB that he is not. Steve went to SF where Bill Walsh modified his scheme to fit the talents of Steve and as you say “the rest is history”.

Ratzlaff had multiple offers from Various D-1 schools. Not sure he duped anyone.

Just curious where you get your information? Google JC QB transfer success rate… You will find that most transfer are either the starter for the team or the primary backup.

Ratzlaff failed because AROD failed to utilize his talent. He tried to force Ratzlaff to play like Slovis and it did not work. That is pretty simple to see to everyone that actually knows football.

One of the best OC BYU ever had was Doug Scovil, he had three all american QB’s play for him. When those guys each had their turn to start, Scovil changed the offensive scheme to fit the talents of the QB, That is also why Jim McMahon and Steve Young were so successfu at BYU, even though they are two completely different QB’s. The OC that followed Doug used the same type of decision to match their scheme to the talent of the QB.

OK, I will explain. I come acrossed as harsh on Retzlaff. BYU was DUPED, they saw the #1 ESPN rating and we jumped, I know I did. But did they evaluate, identify and work on mechanics? Typical of a QB who is not ready for the speed of D1, Retzlaff would cut and run on every play. He was not “coached up” for that 4 second window that you have to get the ball out. Oline could not protect so he cuts and runs.

2nd-footing; All rookies have happy feet, throw off of wrong foot, don’t square up, etc. ARod is the QB coach, nuff said. He had all season to get Ratzlaff ready and he failed!
I say, pay John Beck a butt load of money as the QB coach and let’s get BYU back to QB U. Pull a KY, pay your QBs at BYU buckets of money and get guys that are NFL talent.

Jimmy McK, Detmer, Young all worked like fools to become great. Young is most like Retzlaff of the three, Young struggled the 1st year, then became legend. If Retzlaff struggles, Bohanon has the experience and would be the starter IF his shoulder is 100%, they are tight lipped so I will go with 90%?? But my guy, McCae Hillstead is ready and proven in my mind. I’ve watched him play, he’s quick, laser short passes and smart. Only knock? he is 5’9. We bowl if he is our starter.

Are you sure SF modified the offense for Steve Young? As I remember, Joe Montana was still playing when Steve finally dethroned the king. Steve just fit better with the west coast offense already established.
