Time to bench Taysom

Cougar offense is way too basic. Very predictable. No creativity. Detmer may have been a great quarterback, but he is no offensive genius. None of the plays are creative. Hill is not the guy he use to be. He should relinquish the QB position to Tanner for the good of the team. Hill has had his time in the spot light. The Cougars will be 5/5 or 6/5 at best this year.

Ya, there could be more in the offense. But, you take what the defense is giving you too. Hill needs to be in a more hurry up offense. When we went to that he did well. He even ran much better. Even hurdled a defender.

This mess is hardly Detmer’s fault. . He is working with a one dimensional quarterback who can only run the ball Byu would most likely be 4–0 with Tanner mangum in there Tanner would stretch the field force defenses to quit playing so many players in the box it would open up The run game for Williams as well

One dimensional? He was 23 for 65 or 65.7%. Now, when did he complete most of those passes? 4th quarter when we went into the hurry up offense. This team is built for that offense. Nothing would be different with Tanner except he would be sacked a lot, in which Hill is not being sacked at all.
Does this make any sense? I’m trying to be logical and not reactive nor emotional. The call for changing QB is destructive and pointless.

General thoughts after four games:

  1. Coaching staff. I trust them and I’ll be patient with them as they try to move this program forward. In spite of the record, I think we have a good team and we are seeing some pretty good football at times.
  2. Big 12 talk. Could Bob Bowlsby have possibly handled expansion talks any worse? Whatever happened to the desire to name expansion teams before the start of the football season so this wouldn’t be a distraction? BYU should stick with independence and not be jerked around by the Big 12 and all the politics that come with it.
  3. Taysom Hill. Took a big step forward last week as far as going through his progressions and his accuracy on shorter routes. He does much better when he gets some protection from the offensive line. He still doesn’t have the accuracy on long throws like Tanner does. Triniman would be having more of an impact by now if Tanner were QB. As far as the coaches’ decision to go with Taysom this year, I think had it been anyone other than Taysom, the coaches would have gone with Tanner. Maybe in the short run it hurt the program to go with Taysom. In the long run, I am not sure that we won’t look back and say “all things considered, it worked out for the best.”

Agree with #s 1 and 2 and with # 3, we will have to wait and see.

my thoughts exactly. I think Hill looked better this week but I also think that the WV defense made Hill look better because they run a 3-3-5. less pressure on the Oline. opened the run game and made for the wide open shots down field when WV stacked the box. (which Hill completely whiffed on)

At this point in the year unless you insert Tanner in the Toledo game I don’t think it would make a big difference in Ws. Tanner will be rusty and make mistakes but in terms of Next Year and at this point we are playing for next year because BYU became irreverent once they lost 2 games. I would give Tanner all the time he can get especially since he is burning his Soph year. It is just sad.

At this point we are playing for next year. Just how many people will “fill” the stadium when BYU sports a losing record? The only thing that would energize them now would be a new QB.

And if we lose to Toledo with a new QB with players that need to play hurry up? Panic is not the Lord’s way ;-). Patience is.

lets see, I make a rare exception and respond to you about the state of BYU football and you shoot me a, “panic is not the lord’s way”. I must be some kind of stupid

Talk about panic…Hill could not get rid of the ball fast enough on our last 2 possessions. We had a real chance to win. a real chance and he throws balls that a 3-3-5 are designed to pick off.

HILL HAS NO TOUCH. WE HAVE A TRUE NFL TALENT RIDING PINE.

your answer is to Hurry up. Isn’t that the exact opposite Sitake said he would do in the AZ game? WV is the twin sister to AZ football, high octaine scoring machine.

Fish: ", , , but in terms of Next Year and at this point we are playing for next year because BYU became irreverent once they lost 2 games. I would give Tanner all the time he can get especially since he is burning his Soph year. It is just sad.

Me: Yes and Yes. AGREED!!!

Fish and Roy, so why do think the coaches have decided to keep Mangum “riding the pine”?

Because we have not had a blow out and every single game was winnable up to the last second.

I do not buy into theories people are writing considering why we have no pass game. In my opinion, BYU has about the same caliber of guys that we had last year. We lost Mathews but gained Trinnaman, It is a quandary why Hill does not find this guy, he has speed to burn but gets maybe 2 balls a game.

Mangum had a big year and now he has to sit and burn a year while we watch Hill make dink throws. Worse thing that could happen is for us to grind out a Toledo win and have to replace him when we play MS or BSU. This just sucks.
I will concede that our right side Oline has been pathedic but hey, they are undersized and when the defense can blitz without remorse, those things are going to happen. Tanner would keep defenses honest. We would see an entirely different dynamic out there. A great QB can hide a plethora of weaknesses.

We have seen in 3 games that we can score with a hurry up offense. Like I said too is that Hill’s proficiency went up in that time reroof if each game because he is in rythem.
That 1st pass was plenty catchable. That’s not on him. And as I have said numerous times for those that can read, he should have run. He would have picked up 15-20 yards.

Because they don’t want to ruin the psyche of Hill or the team. Hill has the upper classmen solidly in his corner. And I understand that (he was an exceptional player and seems to be a first class young man) but the players shouldn’t be the decision makers. But again I am not calling for Hill to be replaced, that’s not my call, it is the coaches. But I can wonder when they will replace Hill. From what I have seen Hill can no longer win many games with his feet, I just do not believe he has the explosiveness nor the speed he used to have. I very much hope I am mistaken. No matter what anyone says about Hill’s arm strength, he can only be consistently accurate with short passes and that allows the D to stack their defenders closer to the line of scrimmage and stymie the run. Who is the best passer on the team? IMO it is Mangum. He is more likely to hit medium and long passes and keep the D spread out a bit more allowing Williams to run more. A point that was made by the TV announcers that is an axiom in football; a great running back gets better the more carries he has and we are not using Williams judicially. He has the physical attributes to carry the ball 25 to 30 carries per game. Yet we don’t have the QB to spread the defenders vertically to give the running game the numbers it needs to be truly successful and balance the passing game. I just wonder when they will replace Hill. I just hope it is not in the last 2 or 3 games of he season. Although I am commenting and complaining, I still think Sitake and his staff need 3 years to get their system fully in place and get their athletes into the program.

The staff is making the decisions. So, the question is are you a team player or just another agitator?
Our defense lost that game. Our offense put up 32 points and should have been 35 points with extra points. The coach has made mistakes in games and that is why we are 1-3

The coach didn’t throw 3 picks, including one pick six. Without that, we would have one.

Naw…you don’t get away with that. Big difference. I’m not trying to replace the coach. You are trying to cause contention amongst the players. You should take Mangum at his word when he says there is no QB controversy.

Apples and oranges. Coaches are responsible for in game strategy decisions. Even the announcers were saying the same thing. Should have been 35-35 which would have changed play calling decisions at the end.
