First game so let’s start seeing who knows the most at this point by coming up with our score for the game.
BYU 49 SIU 17
I’ll go 39 - 6 BYU
We should win by 30. The players seem more ready to prove they are much improved from last year.
I think so
Following 2 weeks will be much more telling
BYU 24 SIU 17
Reason:
- BYU in the past tends to play down to the level of competition.
- I watched how they struggled last year against Sam Houston, until I actually see that things are fixed and working, I will not believe the team is any better. Bought into the hype too much last year.
- AROD is still the OC - Can’t play call, can’t do in game adjustment or for that matter, half time adjustments either.
As my ole pappy use to say “The proof is in the pudding”!
- From player’s comments, they are ready to prove they won’t play down to the opponents.
- The real question is have our opponents improved as much as we have on paper? If so, the games will be close. Not enough credit is given to our opponents year in and year out. When we go 12-1 our opponents sucked. When we go 5-7 with our starting QB knocked out, our team and coaches sucked. Funny how that works.
- When plays and game plans work, we are lucky. When they don’t, off with the coach’s heads. Nothing else matters. Slovis goes down with an injury and it’s the coach’s fault. Slovis doesn’t go down and different plays are called and we go 9-3.
As my pappy used to say, the proof is often times subjective and should be taken with a grain of salt.
Well, I have a six-year window that I am judging ARod on… So, it not a play here or there, it is a consistant issue over 6 years.
unless it comes from SN
Yep, and when we did well, lucky. Not so well, terrible coaching.
All the sports writers are in the 34-17 ball park. BYU wants to establish the run. that takes clock.
I will say 31-17 for no apparent reason.
Not funny… actually common sense. That is why you think it is funny, because you don’t always understand logic and common sense. Likewise, you keep commenting about the starting QB being knocked out as some sort of excuse for the awful ending to last season… as if he was so great as a starter.
Weak…
Who said this? Every team gets lucky on occasion, catches a break, etc. I didn’t see that with BYU this past season. When they won games they played well. When they lost, especially games they should have won easily, the played poorly. That poor play was mostly a reflection of the coaches play calling. Every person with even a small understanding of football (your category) understands that. For the life of me I don’t understand why you don’t see it. The only explanation for that is that your understanding of the game is not as good as I originally thought.
As for the score of the game, I will go with 28-20 because the defense compensates for the offenses failures and the offense does just enough things right to hold on for a win.
It’s not common sense at all. Use that huge brain please. Here’s an analogy that would work for this. The Democrats in Wisconsin and other of the 10 toss up states want RFK to remain on the ballot even though he doesn’t want to. Yet, Joe Biden also wants off the ballot and the Democrats let him get off the ballot. Anyone voting for Harris or any Democrat is an idiot hypocrite. Slovis would have gotten BYU to a bowl game…
Not sure if you know what common sense is after your post.
It is not a matter of what JFK Jr. wants or don’t want with removing his name from the ballot, it is a matter of what “State Law” dictates.

As for BYU Football
There has been several articles about how last year, certain players were coming late to meetings, not working on the little things to improve, and an overall disunity among the team. Conner Pay brought this out in an article.
Two things that gives me hope in the articles I have read:
- It was mentioned in an article that Coach Wood changed the technique for blocking for the o-line. He made it more simplified and easier to do. Not sure what he changed, but according to Pay and Keim, the offensive line is doing a lot better opening holes and pass protection.
- Kalani instituted a “point system” that tracks EVERYTHING the player does on and off the field. If the player does not meet expectations, the council will decide what to do about it. this has increased accountability for the players.
I will see if I can find the article for you, so that you won’t think I am blowing smoke.
Like I told Whopper, Coach Wood has changed the technique and blocking schemes for the offensive line. He has simplified the process of how they do their jobs. I am kind of interested to see if this allows the O-line to open holes better, but not sure SIU will be a good test sample, perhaps when they play SMU and Wyoming?
What is really important is how that translate when they go into season play of the BIG12.
BYU 23 - 17
I’m with Floyd on a closer than it should be game. I think Bohanon starts and plays pretty well - especially running the ball. My spidey senses tell me that Bohanon came to BYU knowing he’d have a great chance to start…not saying it was a handshake deal with ARod and Kalani…but we all know Retzlaf is small and limited. I thought he looked pretty bad last year.
Our defense should be much better in year #2 under Hill. Note that on local Portland sports talk radio a couple weeks ago, they were talking about Sitake and how his coaching seat is “warm.” In Vegas, he’s the 8th most likely FBS to get fired first this season. The two top BYU HC possibilities mentioned were Hill and then Kellen Moore, who is now the OC of the Philly Eagles. Kellen got baptized in Dallas 6-7 years ago so he checks that box. Just tuck that away as a possibility. One of the local sports talk hosts is a BYU grad - Jason Sukanek (sp?) who was a great Center for BYU 25 years ago. Unfortunately, he doesn’t represent the church very well anymore, but he is super interesting and opinionated.
did not know that. I have always liked Kellen Moore, he would make a great combo with Hill as the head coach but then Moore may be wanting a HC Job at this point
Do you have an inside person that knows who will start? All I hear is Retzlaff is starting.
It is game day so I will make my prediction. I am a reluctant realist, but a hopeful Idealist at heart and the hype is starting to win out. I think the defense will dominate and keep SIU to 2 scores, one of them coming late in the game. The offense will score 3 in the first half, but will have a lot of miscues and the defense will keep them from totally destructing. Second half we’ll score 2 struggling to get one in the third and a lucky one late. 35 to 14 BYU. there will be a lot of question on offense, but we will all be happy with the defense.
Prediction on starting QB Retzlaff for first half, Bohanon second. Bohanon will not look good solidifying Retzlaff as the starter.
No, I don’t. It’s just purely my hypothesis. Part of it is based on what we saw from Retzlaf last year - he didn’t look impressive. Hey, I’d love if he was great…I’ll just believe it when I see it. We are having a huge watch party at my house tonight with tons of relatives here.
