Transfers of import

The fish tell you that??? You must be fishing at pyramid Lake

BYU had a loaded roster with tons of depth. Probably up to 13 quality D1 players. Nobody should be surprised if a few move on that didn’t get much playing time. These kids these days expect to get big minutes as freshmen because they were heavily recruited. None of them expects to sit behind equally talented players with more experience. Guys like Catchings expect to be starters right out of the box. Crawford did don’t play much because he had Hall and Demin in front of him and I am sure Catchings expected to start. He did start but lost his spot due to defensive deficiencies and a quality player with more experience took his spot as a starter. He was still playing and contributing until his injury. I suspect with Dybantsa coming in and with what BYU could have coming back he was looking at coming off the bench again and top 40 recruits don’t take that well. Factor in the signing of the Washington transfer and the roster was getting crowded again.

Those pyramid fish are no joke. lol

Seems to me that these kids would be better served to stick with the program they know. When they transfer, the reset button is pushed and they have to learn a whole new system. Sucks that catchings did not progress on D and the hyper extension did not help things. I wish him luck

And the coach, or one of the coaches, he trusted the most being away during that key time of injury certainly didn’t help.
He does have a do not contact so the chance of returning is not zero…just given his reticence in the past few weeks to be very positive it certainly seems like it is awfully close.

Hall has decided to look around. Fills like he is gone.
BYU guard enters transfer portal

BYU will need a couple of Point guards. 3 if Demin decides to jump to the NBA

I’m not surprised by Hall, seems like he didn’t fit into KY scheme this last year. I don’t think he was going to get many minutes next year either.

Two more that I am also curious about are Dawson and Brody. I don’t think Dawson transferred here to get 15 minutes a game. Brody might get an opportunity to play this next year if he sticks around, depending on other incoming portal additions.

In my opinion, he looked slow most of the time. Couldn’t turn the corners. Reluctant to shoot. Obviously wasn’t working hard enough or the others around him were. There might be some lower level teams in the MWC or the WCC that could use him. Or, he reads this and gets his butt into the gym and works a lot harder and stays.

I hope Hall finds a good landing spot…

Perhaps Southern Utah or Dixie State? Maybe even Weber State or right up the road to Utah Valley University. They had a pretty good team this past season.

I don’t think he will play after college so he should just go somewhere and have fun.

Whoa Whoa Whoa, Hall- we are talking a point that won 20+ games a year…in the big12
(pointing this discussion to everyone on this board)

Why all the lack of love? I can count a number of games this year where Demin was ineffective, Hall (along with Foos) came in a saved the show vs. ranked teams. Tell me I am wrong.

Sure Hall can be beat on D at times, Shoots 3s with a step back because he is not a jump shooter, Shoots from the chest area, not above the head…and lastly, he did not shut down outside shooters but still Hall could beat almost anyone in D1 if he set his mind to it. He has at least 20 (just guessing here) game winners as the go to. Those guys are RARE in the portal.

Finally Hall knows BYU basketball inside and out.
It takes years to get players to become the root and soul of a program, Hall was the poster child until Demin showed up so I would keep him around in the role as the #2 point. And pay him big money!!

Baker: Don’t think he will transfer, another gut call, remember when everyone was jumping to the transfer portal when Pope left. It was Baker who sold them on returning. Hope he sticks around, HE is a gamer, instant offense. Fair passer. about as good on D as Hall, so a challenge on D but still a million miles ahead of Knell.

Some of the things you mention are what I’ve been saying. He was worse this year than the last years. He was slower and hesitant. Perhaps the talent level was much better around him and what he was playing against. Even Baker looked a bit slower. So, the talent level has gotten better. That’s what we are saying. It is what he looked like this year. Even Knell was far superior and effective than Hall was.

Robby McCombs really knows his stuff, and you like to argue so I will let Robby explain to you what I have been saying.

Why did Dallin Hall leave?

I’ve seen mixed opinions on Dallin Hall, but I am a big Dallin fan. As a sophomore, I think he was BYU’s most valuable player — not necessarily the best, but incredibly valuable. BYU underwent a massive step up in competition, and as the only true point guard on the roster Dallin was top 5 in the Big 12 in both assists and assist-to-turnover-ratio.

Dallin struggled to adjust to his role off the bench in a new system this year, but the last six weeks or so of the regular season he really hit his stride and was an important piece to BYU.

Sources tell me that Dallin wants a clear starting role and a NIL amount he was comfortable with, and BYU was not able to provide that to him at this point as they explore other guards in the portal and weigh the potential return of Egor.

Pure stats wise, Dallin is replaceable. He averaged 7 points and 4 assists this last season. BYU can find several point guards who can do that and more. What is not replaceable is Dallin’s locker room presence. That is difficult to quantify, but a 4-year point guard that stays with one program his entire college career is incredibly rare. Dallin was a big leader to the team this season in year one of the Kevin Young even though he wasn’t a starter. BYU will piece together many new, talented pieces next season. Dallin would be a great asset as a leader and someone who really knows BYU. BYU won’t replace that. And that may be just fine since BYU needs to increase its talent level if they want to win a national championship.

See, nothing to argue about…You don’t replace a Hall very easy.
and it may well be that he looks around and comes back because I don’t see anybody out there willing to pay elite money for Hall’s 7 pts-3 assists a game output.

Hall looked into the transfer portal last year. He knows what’s out there. If Demin stays, Hall won’t come back. With what is coming in, the talent level will be greater than this year. Hall didn’t improve like Saunders did. We all saw this. The question is, can Hall improve? He looks slower than the last 2 years.

I think his injury at the beginning of the year had strong effects until the take off point of the season…I can see him talking to other teams, but I hope to see him back.

I read an interesting report that Tanner Toolson has been contacted by BYU after he entered the portal…seems like a Dawson Baker type player to me. So possible solid piece not a star…but professional career waiting for him at some level.

Agree 100% on Hall. A very valuable player the past 3 seasons. You build your team around the stars and they are only around a year or two. You need solid role players who are going to be in your 8 man rotation who will stick around 4 years. You have to have a bunch of those guys as the core of your team to be a sweet sixteen team, and better year after year.

I really despise this free agency system that NIL and the portal have created. It has created massive instability for schools. It forces coaches to be constantly searching the portal for players because they know that every year they are going to lose key players. It creates a system where there is no loyalty to players on the part of coaches and no loyalty to team on the part of players.

I bet Hall stays if Demin leaves. He would be the defacto starter at point. I think he wants a situation where he is the starter his senior year. He had several big games the latter half of the season once he had recovered from his injuries and got comfortable with his role. He and Fouss had
great chemistry. BYU loses at ISU without Hall and probably a few other games as well.

When you play, sometimes 11 guys there are going to be some guys who think they should get more minutes. Most years guys like Crawford and Kozlowski would have been in the rotation so an exodus of some players was inevitable.

I’ll insert my mantra that I used often for Football:

Not a matter of love for Hall. I think what he’s been able to accomplish and contribute is amazing, praiseworthy and byu bball is so much better for it.
BUT BYU Sports, especially bball has crossed the Rubicon. It is Full on a business where the bottom line is winning, Glory and Money. If Demin stays halls role will not be much different, maybe even diminished. If Demin leaves then portal or pull Crawford back or something.
Hall is not a starter on a top 10 Team. Just that simple. If Hall is insisting on being a starter then he is overplaying his hand Zelinsky Style. The decision to go is halls decision alone.
Itā€˜s a new world, and there’s some coldness that comes with it. There will be casulties.

Is it worth it? My vote is yes. But do feel for outstanding Young men like Hall

Well, we sometimes clash but I agree with 100% of your post. My knock on Hall isn’t about his leadership and occasionally good game. It’s about where BYU is going with respects to recruiting. We may have 3 or 4 first round NBA draft picks next year. Hall is a great WCC or MWC talent. He wants to up his game, make the improvements if possible. Moving to another team won’t help with that. You have to play with the best to be the best. That’s what Young is doing at BYU.

8 deep is old school. What Young did and many other top schools this year did is get 12 deep and let the players fight it out. Be willing to do very deep to win games.

Toolson is a Baker type guy. Solid but KY is looking to get better on D so to me, it would be like getting another Knell, Great offense but you have to hide him on D.

Yes, we are all looking at this the same way. Just to add:

Remember the name Silas Demarey, 6’5 guard out of Georgia

Well, he isn’t coming to Provo. What happened?

Like Chaz Lanier last year didn’t seem to give KY much of a chance before committing elsewhere…best of luck to him with Coach Hurley.
