1 Wy is very bad. They can’t throw the ball and certainly could not run on BYU, Checkmate.
2 After a terrible underthrown interception. Retzaiff settled in and played a very good game, his running is good, not elite but very good.
3 Roberts had a career night…Lassitter was sooooo frustrated, poor balls his way all night. He fully deserved that TD catch.
4 Tight ends played a big role (as they should, we have 4 very good TEs) Hill’s walk in TD and that cheap shot that almost took his head off, hope he recovers from that head injury.
5 Kelly and the LBs feasted on Wy all night and I think our Dbs were even better.
6 Still Frustrated with our Oline, they don’t run block worth a darn.
7 Game was called entirely too tight. Flags and phantam holding calls all night. Hans Olsen could not believe the ticky tack calls. What conference were the refs from?
8 Great win in a hostile Wy environment. now we get ready for our 2nd toughest game of the year…@ home vs. K St…these guys are contenders and could easily be conference champs
Fowler brought this up in post game and it is one of the reasons I wish the NCAA would bring all officials under one umbrella.
each conference determines how they call penalties like holding. that is why we get hokding calls in one game, while in another game they dont call it on the same technique.
all calls should be uniformed throughout the NCAA.
the rule states that the offensive lineman hands are within the width of his shoulders, it is a legal block, if it extends beyond the shoulders it is holding.
the last drive for Retzlaff holding calls were all legal blocks.
Retzlaff brought that up in post game interview, he went to lassitter after the bad throw before halftime.
He said he would get a throw in the second half, Lassitter response was “this isnt about me, it about the team scoring touchdowns”.
Retzlaff said that is why the team is better this year because people are more concerned about the team instead of individual stats.
Lassiter can say that, but we all saw his body language every time Retzaiff missed him. I really like both our quarterbacks. I have a feeling either one of them can win a game. But if you want to really make noise, you have to hit the big plays. And that guy would be Retzaiff.
The real reason why Byu is so much better is their defense is exceptional. They look very fast in the LBer corps and the DBs can Defend one on one
Our Oline is not that good Particularly our center, had several penalties and he supposed to be the leader of our oline. Bad technique
As Floyd said, only a couple of the holds were actually holding. A couple of those refs look like they should have retired a long time ago.
The OL does a good job on pass rushes. Whyoming is a rushing defense. We need Retzlaff or Bohanan to keep running more.
The main point is, BYU has played 3 teams and won, 3-0. However, we have learned very little about BYU, with respect to how they will perform against top-tier teams. My opinion is that the BYU offense is, perhaps a decent MWC offense but on the road not a good Big12 offense. Defensively they are “good”, but not “great” which is better than we are used to. At home they are 15% better than on the road, which gives them a chance against anyone they play at home. Wyoming is the worst team I have seen this year, so the victory was nice, but not overly impressive. If I was building a top notch team, I would start with the offensive and defensive lines and work from there. The defensive line has been good, the OL, not so much. IMO, BYU’s receivers are outstanding, but you have to be able to deliver them the ball, consistently on target. I wish we could have see Bohanon more yesterday, just to see his current skill set. I am trying to see if BYU can get 3 more wins. If the defense can play like they have been, I see them being bowl eligible, which would be a step forward
The defensive line is very good. The OL is good on pass protection. It’s hard to tell how good they are with the run without LJ and Ropati playing healthy. Saturday we will know more.
I take people at their word until proven otherwise.
What Retzlaff was pointing out in the interview was the fact that the environment on the team is more concerned for the “team” than for individual stats.
Yes Floyd, we all heard it. He wasn’t frustrated that he didn’t noteriety for catching a touchdown and yardage. That doesn’t mean he wasn’t frustrated at Retzlaff for the poor throws.
As you like to tell other people “Watch the video link I provided at the 47-minute mark” and you can understand the concept that Retzlaff was trying to make.
I’ll add more later, but just have to say that I watched the “hold” on Pay 3 times with my son (who knows as much or more about the rules as I do). When we got done laughing, Our conclusion was that the referee HAD to get the number wrong because Pay simply put an off balance guy face down and wasn’t remotely close to holding in any way, under any interpretation of the rules from ANY semi competent official. MAYBE the LG had a little jersey and they meant to call it on him? But sometimes officials—especially officials eager to call everything to prove how smart they are—-just wind up looking stupid, but there’s nothing you can do but go to the next play. If that referee watched that back and thought it was a hold, he should find other work.
