Wyoming Predictions

so I thought it was time to create a thread for our predictions on the game tomorrow

Defense: shutout
Offense: will be anemic with one score a quarter and plenty of stalled out possessions. Roderick will keep JR in the entire time, but it will be obvious that he should pull him.

prediction: 20 to 0 BYU

We will be 21-0 at the end of the 1st quarter. At least one defensive touchdown. 35-0 by halftime. Bohanan and others play the 2nd half. Because of this, Whyoming will score. BYU 45-17.

that is a bold prediction. we didn’t even do that well against SIL.

Hopper lives to make ridiculous predictions. He has been close to right about 1/100 times. Mainly he just wants to put up dumb comments to see if anyone will take the bait …. Like I just did!

BYU 27-20. BYU defense isn’t as good as some of you portend and the offense isn’t as bad. 2nd year in the league-still a very average team. Hill is a good defensive coach, but the rest-at least on the offensive side-mediocre. I’m not sure Sitake is worth the money they are paying him. What is his value as a coach in definitive terms? Nice guy, but no real expertise, not even defensively

Wait a minute. Where’s your prediction?

Welcome back, brother. I’ve missed your posts (although I rarely post off season). We are better with you here.

My predictions:

  1. BYU 24-10. I posted on the other thread that I’d be disappointed if BYU doesn’t win by 3 scores (TDs), yet I’m predicting only 2.
  2. The D will be good, but the O will turn it over on our end to give Wyo a short field TD.
  3. At least once we will have 3rd and 5-8 yards and ARod will throw behind the sticks and I will shake my head in confusion.

Even if dominant, with the new running clock rules it’s hard to score a lot if your primary plays are dive, inside counter, fly sweep, zone off tackle, and 5 yard stick routes.

I say abandon the tough guy hubris and stop talking about how we need to have a dominant running game. We don’t have a dominant line, nor do we have a dominant RB, and our QB is an average runner AT BEST. Go back to throwing 45 times a game. Last game we were 2/13 on 3rd downs against a very average defense. THAT was thoroughly embarrassing. Remember that even the BYU homers at DesNews said our offense “set college football back a decade.” Not BYU–ALL of college football! We could not possibly have done worse had we abandoned this insane notion that we have to have a “balanced” offense.

ARod has always seemed so hell bent on his plan that he ignores the talent around him. 2 catches each for Roberts and Lassiter. Oh…runs around the globe, climbs Mt. Everest and back to my computer…kaaaaaay. Even with TERRIBLE QB play in that game we averaged 7.0 yards per passing attempt, while averaging 3.8 yards per rushing attempt. If JR is so bad that he can’t hit Roberts and Lassiter more than twice each, either A) the QB is broken, B) the system should be scrapped, or C) both.

Thus my prediction of a lower score than some others might predict.

I predicted a lower margin just for the fact it’s Wyoming. No love lost, and this is most likely Wyoming’s bowl game. Since BYU is merely an average team, defensively better than offensively, it averages to be mediocre and though Wyoming isn’t very good, they have a hard nosed coach that will have them play over their heads, which hopefully is not an upset

I agree. I am worried that they will hit us fast and early and we will struggle to get our feet under us the rest of the game.

If I were the Cougs, I would come to Laramie with a chip on my shoulder, because the Cowboys will have one!

Chip on their shoulders? I don’t even think BYU even knows what that is. I haven’t seen that kind of play ever under Kalani

lol I was thinking the same thing! I haven’t seen BYU play with a chip on their shoulder, since Edwards was coach. Maybe some of Mendenhall’s defensive players, but glad you brought it up and not me:joy::joy::joy:

I never make predictions but will say BYU 28-3 because Wyoming is terrible.

1 Why Wyoming players and coaches view BYU game as a ‘big deal’ – Deseret News
respect the bitter hate (I don’t call it a rivalry. they do but we don’t). Wy always gets waaaaay up for BYU games.. Losing to Idaho is unthinkable but discounting Wy as a team that could beat BYU is a recipe for disaster.

2 When BYU has the ball. Even down our two starting RBs, BYU needs to pound the rock on Wy. If we can, I say blow out. BYU football: 2 running backs may be out when BYU visits Wyoming – Deseret News
Reserves Miles Davis and Enoch Nawahine got the bulk of the carries in the second half, and made plays that enabled the Cougars to pull off the upset win as double-digit underdogs. We should be good.

Count on Retzaiff to play smarter. Wy will not be able to break our Oline. Big advantage BYU.
knowing his future is on the line. Retzaiff will have a solid game.

  1. When Wy has the ball.
Their QBs have been atrocious. neither starter Jr. Svoboda or Fr. Anderson are runners so BYU pins their ears back a tries to get Sacks. Svoboda has just 168 yds in two games, 2 interceptions vs. ASU. Big advantage BYU.
Sr DJ Jones is the RB. He can do damage but if Wy is one dimensional, stop the run. Win the game in a blow out.

BYU is 8.5 favored to win. I say BYU pitches a TD shutout and BYU wins by 3 scores

Does Wyo have anyone who can consistently block Jack Kelly? Nope, didn’t think so. He is a wrecking ball. Chris was right about Kelly’s speed in pursuit. Unreal.

I’d say it was a shame Tuiaki didn’t think Kelly was good enough for BYU, but it worked out better for Kelly because he was coached up by Hill to be an NFL PROSPECT.

Byu 42 -10
Retzlaff will have stellar game as he plays his second preseason game against a way over matched team. The speed and skill of the opposition will be at about JCC level so all things will look eerily look familiar („I‘m home!“)

Unfortunately this will turn out to be fools gold that Blew-ARod shines up and parades around all the next week -as indisputable proof that Retzlaff has taken care of his reckless/panic/hero issues (after 2 years and 7 games by just flipping a switch that somehow he couldn‘t just flip before).
KState will go to the obvious Pressure Pressure Pressure to cause Retzlaff, under the guiding hand of BlewARod to fumble twice and throw 2 interceptions.
Unfortunately Bohanon can’t save the game because he only got 5 minutes of handing the ball off against the Cowgirls.
BYU loses a close one that the defense almost won and the golden opportunity to win the conference is lost in the first conference game.

Whew! Thanks for indulging me. That was therapeutic!

Wy will bring it today. Would not be surprised to see them leading BYU in a very tough game. Reminds me of the old WAC games between Hawaii vs. BYU. We never saw them as rivals but they sure did…and half the time we would go over there and get our A$$s beat.

As for Retzaiff:
Where the BYU Quarterback Situation Stands After Two Games
If you really want to piece together what AROD is saying to dumb it down…
“Retzaiff gives us chunk plays, the chance to hit home runs, If we really wanted a game manager, we would be starting Bohanan.”

per Casey Lundquist:
If BYU is going to put up points, it can’t rely on 12-play and 13-play drives. BYU needs chunk plays. Retzlaff is capable of creating chunk plays with his arm. While there is risk involved, there is also high reward.

BYU asked Retzlaff to slowly, methodically move the chains against SMU. Friday night’s win over SMU proved that even the safest throws like screen passes aren’t risk free. High-risk, low-reward plays like the tunnel screens to the tight ends need to be replaced with deep shots downfield.

If BYU is going to start Retzlaff, they need to put him in a position to succeed, not just a position to avoid mistakes. If BYU is looking for a game manager, Gerry Bohanon is the better choice. He is more experienced and he’s more dangerous with his legs.

There you have it.
Hope I am way off. BYU wins in a tight one in Laramie.

Good intel. Didn’t know the chunk plays vs game manager between the two was that different. Thanks.
Thought in Fall practice they were similar in most areas and it was just that JR got the nod b/c less turnovers - ironic now
I hope your wrong too! - my blow out prediction is based more on hope than logic.

I listened to Bradley PoPinga In the interview yesterday, he was saying that both guys were neck and neck and spring ball but all the sudden Retzaiff turned it on like a switch and it wasn’t even close.

He also said that after the southern Illinois game, everyone was talking Heisman. After SMU they want to hang the guy. One game does not define career.
