BYU vs. LMU decapitations, etc

Is this how you justify losing to what was the last place team in the conference before they beat BYU last night?

I can’t believe I am saying this but based on the talent this and past BYU teams have had the last several years, I think it may be time for Rose to retire. He has lost the ability to motivate or coach players beyond a reasonable measure of improvement. In fact, it seems the players improve very little, if at all, from year to year. He needs to retire…

Both parties are not equally bad. The Dems have had their party hijacked by socialist and communists. The Republicans are still on the capitalist and liberty side. Not perfect but certainly not where the Democrats are.

We are struggling with a young group. But, so is the volleyball team struggling. List tonight to UCSB.

Disagree and the players disagree with you. Just like the volleyball team tonight, sometimes the other team plays way over their heads.

Hey - I watched that volleyball match last night and to say that “the other team played way over their heads” is not exactly the truth. BYU absolutely stunk last night and if you read the coaches assessment, he says the same thing (just a bit more diplomatic). Leo is way overrated, as the only good sets he can make come off perfect passes - of which BYU has very little. The Libero misses on half of his passes, the serve game (particularly the floaters) is pathetic (I mean, how many float serves can you put in the net), the blocks are late and leaky (saw a triple block that left the entire line open - really), and bone head misses abound. And Storm is a hitting error machine. This team has talent but zero discipline. Worst in many, many years and won’t make playoffs for one of the few times in last 20 years.

I agree with most comments on B-ball above, but there is one I would challenge a bit. I keep hearing that Rose is the best coach we’ve ever had, and that is always based on his win/loss record. We need to get off of that. I think the WAC and the MWC both had more really good teams that were almost impossible to beat at home. And pre-season schedules going back to mid 70’s up through 2000 or so also featured more talented teams. Now Rose gets mostly stinkers to play against. He has compiled a high percentage against way lower overall talented teams than anyone else. I think Rose should be looked at from what he does with the talent he gets - and that isn’t nearly so pretty. If anyone can name several players (not named Fredette) who looked better when they left than they did the first day on the court, let me know. I think you’ll struggle. Rose struggles big team improving players and to me, that is a sign of a good coach. I look at a Quinn Snyder for example. Jazz struggle but if he ever gets this young group all healthy, look out because this guy takes raw talent and makes them something special. To bad Utah is just not a permanent home for the great ones. Can you imagine what this team would look like if Gordon where still there. Gordon, Golbert and Mitchell would be a super force to reckon with. So anyway, I don’t have a very high opinion of Rose as to me, he can’t develop raw talent and doesn’t improve players he does get.

So, when we beat Ohio St. we were playing way over our heads or their coach really stinks and doesn’t develop talent?
Nobody developed Michael Jordan’s talent. He wasn’t self-motivated and worked harder than anyone else did. Kobe Bryant was the same way. Anyone with talent develops based on their own hard work and self motivation. A coach tries to find a few players that will work really hard. Perhaps Rose recruits talent but lazy talent.
Each generation has its own personality. In the 70’s players stuck around through their senior years. So, Frank Arnold a great recruiter had great talent but relative to that era. The difference was that talent worked hard in the off season to get better. Ainge shot 50,000 shots in the off season.

disagree with what? and what do the players disagree with? be specific so I know what to respond to.

So are you saying that basically all recruits that BYU gets are lazy?? I will agree that this is SOME of the explanation (see below), but isn’t it part of a good coaches resume that he knows how to motivate his players.

I remember my high school days when in the summer I would play 3-4 hours of ball on a good day, yet I had friends that would literally not play 5 minutes. Half or more of my time was just me, the ball and the hoop. I guess it comes down to your passion for the game. We all wanted to win, but some of us were willing to work for that while others just hoped it would happen. So do we have too many of the latter kind?

They disagree with the fans take on Rose.

Although you contradicted yourself, in the end, it’s partly the passion for the game. But even more so, it’s about focus. The former trainer for the Lakers said the focus is more important than attitude, skill and talent. He said talent is way overrated. Focus, focus focus is what made the greats, great. He was talking about Kobe Bryant who on his last game scored 60 points with all his injuries. He was talking about James and Federer and Brady who late in their playing days still win and dominate. Focus. Our players don’t have it. And, that’s not something a coach can motivate someone to do. The individual has to learn how to do it and have the passion to do it at the highest level. The idea of motivation is way overrated.

And most college players are known for complaining about their coach… haha.

Do you really think you know exactly what is going on and what type of relationship a coach has with each and every player?

The team is lost, they don’t prepare for games and obviously they don’t care much that they lose to LMU, Pacific and others.

Well, it was obvious we practiced for Gonzaga and not for LMU. We only lost tonight because Bryant couldn’t shoot. That’s it. Neither could Dastrup.

Yeah, well a lot of the Gonzaga players couldn’t shoot either so that is why they only won by what they did.

I thought I told you Dastrup was done and there was no point talking about it anymore. He will not help this team in any significant way the rest of the season.

Maybe next season if he is still around…

Worthington showed His worthiness tonight against Gonzaga. We lost because one player couldn’t make his shots. And his name wasn’t Haws. Other than that we played equally well as Gonzaga. Not hitting any shots in the last 2.5 minutes lost the game too. It’s either that or Bryant.
Had we played with this intensity against LMU we would have won.

I get it. You want to take this discussion game by game. I’ll concede your points to you. But I’m more interested in the long term trend. We lack consistency. Tonight didn’t change that. Even winning tonight wouldn’t change it.

We’re NIT-bound because of inconsistentcy, not talent, scheme, personnel, or even coaching to a degree.

All I want to know is how can we be more consistent?

Totally agree with your comments above. It would be nice to see these officials graded on their competence in calling games in the mighty WCC! However, these last number of years…
We can’t expect more from this team when we continue with the same old recruiting (exception Bryant, and Childs). How is it that St Mary’s and Gonzaga come up with exceptional athletes year in and year out. They recruit internationally and we get star players from Utah HS’s. We add a 4 star recruit he rides the pine most of the time. I used to go to games at the Marriott Center and finally decided to stay home and watch these on TV. We just don’t have good number of high level players that can dominate, shot and play defense. Randy Bennett and Mark Few are outstanding coaches and keep their teams on the top every year. Gonzaga made it to the finals last year. My question is who recruits the best in this conference WCC? Rose, Bennett or Few??? Will things ever change or do we just accept 3rd or 4th place each year.

What would be nice is all 5 starters play well in the same game. Bryant is usually money and what a horrible game. Haws is up and down but had a great game and made some impossible shots and plays.
Worthington had his best game of the season. Dastrup has two wide open 3’s and was short. Hardnett was ineffective although didn’t hurt us that much. Nixon looked pathetic. Play Dastrup instead of Nixon.

A couple weeks ago you couldn’t stop talking about getting Nixon back and how it would be such a big improvement for the team. I keep telling you to forget about Dastrup because Rose messed him up mentally and his head is somewhere else right now… he probably wishes he could grab a megaphone and lead some cheers at this point.

The team is done for this season and don’t expect anything different next season. They will have everyone back but Rose will figure out some way to mess it up again… if it isn’t Dastrup, he’s a RM and Rose treats him like a 12 year old, it will be someone else.

Season is not over. And next year will be fantastic. As far as Dastrup is concerned he’s just not as good as you think. Face the fact.

So misguided and wrong on so many levels. I talked about the problems that BYU would have as the season wore on and it is happening… as the season wears on.

What did you predict would happen? Nothing… except maybe winning the wcc, going to the ncaa or whatever. This is because you don’t really understand what goes on each season. This is what we see every year. Don’t you think, just a little bit, that it is kind of a pattern and that something could change to make it better? Do you think BYU is capable of winning the league? or of performing better in the wcc? If so, then why don’t they? If not, then what can they do to accomplish more?

I could go back and look at your comments every year for the last 5 and see the same things… blah, blah, blah but nothing really that suggests what could be done to improve the team. Only the same, “if we made layups or so and so hit his shots BYU would be in first place” or something like that.

Sorry, but I am like a lot of the other fans who post here. I see some quality players with talent, some players who are top 100 guys, some real potential for the team to be really good… and I see it squandered, I see them underperform their potential and expectations year after year… and you know what? IT BUGS ME!

I’m glad you are unaware and don’t see it… it is probably better to live with blinders on, not knowing or seeing what is going on. Making weak excuses for their play, etc. Maybe that is the best way to deal with it, pretending and make believing…

Great analysis on what ails BYU except I would point out that While Few was subbing out his starters routinely, Rose did not sub any of the Big Three until 6 minutes left in the 1st half and then he subbed both Childs and Bryant at the same time. I told everyone in the room at that moment…Retarded. There went the lead.
