I don’t really try and concern myself with how God created the universe. It’s something you and I will never completely understand in this life. I try to deal with life through faith and logic and leave the rest to a later enlightenment. Yes I believe that man has walked the moon-no I don’t think the earth is flat-yes I believe the earth has evolved through the creation process for billions of years through God’s hand. These are my personal beliefs, but you are welcome to your own-i could care less-but wish you luck in your endeavors to discover truth
I agree that how the creation universe isn’t all important concerning our faith. However, the more I study both sides of the issue the more I see logic in the young universe versus the old universe. And, we have the Bible and Pearl of Great Price that says the universe is young. Is that if any importance?
Well young compared to what! Our concept of time is probably much different from God’s. If this world becomes the celestial world it will obviously undergo a tremendous change also which probably will involve other changes in this solar system. Once again-intriguing questions, but speculative answers. I am convinced they will occur by natural occurrences and not magic hocus-pocus that others like to imagine. There is a reason for everything, and some of it will probably be self-inflicted as in nuclear or chemical warfare or poisoning of the atmosphere. As prophets relate to us of earthquakes in divers places. It will be horrific, but I need to concentrate more on daily occurrences coping with what’s in front of my domain. This is a sports blog-right?
If you ever want to read an interesting take on it, Elder John A. Widstoe did a book on it.
Talk about a dinosaur book. There are actual current MIT PHd’s That have gone over to the young earth side.
There are some things to consider concerning the age of the Earth. Some people get hung up on 6 thousand years as the age of the Earth prior to the millennium. In the Doctrine and Covenants section 77 Joseph Smith said the 7 seals represented the 7 thousand year temporal history of the Earth. I believe that history commenced with the fall of Adam. I have no idea how old the Earth was before the fall or how long Adam and Eve were on the Earth before the fall. The six day creation period is figurative and is used to describe the order and process of the creation and is not to be taken that God literally created the Earth in six 24 hour periods. We sometimes get the impression that Adam and Eve were created and then almost immediately the fall occurred. We have no idea how long they were here before the fall. The scriptures teach us that time is only measured by man. It is my opinion that time, as concerning this Earth, began with the fall. Before the fall time is irrelevant. This is my opinion only and I don’t know if any general authorities of the church have written anything that would back up my opinion.
As far as evolution is concerned it is irrelevant to me. If evolution is found to be fact when the creation process is made known to us it won’t change the fact that God is the creator. I have my doubts about evolution but the scientific community says it is settled science but that is the same thing they say about man made climate change. Whenever the phrase settled science is used it should raise a big red flag. Since when is science ever settled? Plenty of things that were alleged to be settled science have since been tweaked or found to be incorrect. When we hear the word settled science it means a large number of scientists have signed on to the notion that the book is closed on some issue. It often has an agenda and unfortunately, in today’s world, it is hard to get published and receive funding and jobs if you don’t adhere to the orthodox scientific doctrine of the day. There is no intention of studying some questions any further because academia says those questions are settled and you can be destroyed professionally if you wander off the reservation.
The story of man being formed from clay and the woman formed from a rib is also figurative. Neither I nor the evolutionists know with any certainty what the process was. I have had a number of discussions with hard core evolutionists and most of them are hard core atheists. They argue that evolution explains the creative process and there is no need to believe in a god to explain our existence. The problem they have is that evolution only explains a possible process and doesn’t answer the question of what power is behind the process other than chance. They will say there was a big bang but why would all the right elements be in place and a big bang occur unless there was an intelligent force behind the process? I am not saying there was a big bang and that evolution is fact all I am saying is that if they are fact they didn’t occur by accident… I don’t think most people question that things have evolved but the question is whether evolution is a satisfactory explanation for the origin of man. I would say it is not.
So, Genesis takes us through the 6 creative periods (years). Then, there are 7 years of of temporal history including the Millennium. That’s 13,000 years total. As far as if the 6 “days” are figurative, that’s an opinion. I’ve heard it said by those who study Hebrew that the word for “day” refers to time periods and not necessarily days. But, that’s also just opinion. The real question would be is there evidence for the earth, or universe or both to be only 12,000 years old at this point (Not in the Millennium yet)? Was the universe and earth organized in 6,000 years of earth time and is there evidence? Also, is there enough evidence to contradict secular science evidence such as the age of dinosaurs and was there a literal world-wide flood?
Just one point that is being discussed in scientific journals is “Soft tissues and decay-sensitive biomolecules that are still intact and not degraded shouldn’t exist in fossils that are supposedly millions of years old—but they do.” Both sides of the issue have their comebacks. Yet, the young earth scientists make the most sense from what I’ve read on the subject. Fascinating
Thanks I’ll look it up and read it
You make some good points. I’m not really concerned with when and how. Someday I will get it figured out but not in this life. The man I really admire is Albert Einstein-quotes “God does not play dice with the Universe “. A devout Jew, who knew there was a creator and one of the most brilliant men that ever lived
Not really-there is also a flat earth society and a conspiracy theory about man not having gone to the moon. Anything you want to find u can find it somewhere
Devout Jew? Einstein was anything but.
Flat earth society? Who is suggesting this? I’m simply implying God doesn’t lie to us through his Prophets. So, there may be more to learn about the earth and the universe than what secular scientists provide. It isn’t their science that may be off. It may be their interpretation and I’ll just keep an open mind.
I will say this that after reading several scientific articles in this subject, the scientists use a lot of fuzzy words. “May be” “could be” “thought to have” and a lot of other fuzzy words or opinions.
Sorry he was-he was even offered the leadership of Israel-you need to do your homework
You need to pay attention when you go to the temple -maybe if you do things will become less fuzzy in your brain
Oh, good grief! No he was not… He was a womanizer too.
Nothing there suggests a 13.6 billion year universe. Just creative time periods. The Hebrew version of Genesis suggests it too. But, why would Father in Heaven make us wait so long?
He was offered the presidency of Israel by Ben Gurion the prime minister of Israel in 1952 through Abba Eban, dependent on approval of the Knesset He was also referred to as a favorite Son of the Jewish population with the deepest respect that the Jewish people can bestow upon a Son. In his refusal based upon age and lack of natural aptitude for this position he said "my relationship with the Jewish people has become my strongest human bond, since I have become aware of our precarious situation among the nations of the world. Yes he was a greatly esteemed Jew, whom in accordance with his character, declined this great honor accorded him by the state of Israel. Was he perfect? No. Are you? Far from it. He is historically known for embracing Judaism.
Do you have a mental block? Or are you just a trouble maker? Did anyone mention 13.6 billion years? Scientists only estimated the Earth being 4.5 billion years old and the Sun being 5.5 billion years old. I have always had questions about the age of the Earth. I sought the answer in the temple and I no longer have questions. That’s good enough for me. I no longer have questions and I have no need to indulge myself in a flat earth society or a young earth society or a man has never walked on the moon society
Well, he wasn’t a practicing Jew. Did you watch the mini-series on Einstein?
I did. 13.6 billion years of existence for the universe. Why did we have to wait so long?
